New Culvert on Lowden
Road?
I have taken several steps to determine what can be
done to minimize the impact on the watershed and
specifically Babbling Brook:
- On
Sunday, I took a ride to take a look, and discovered that
the new (actually improved since it did exist
before) culvert just beyond Hay Rd. on Lowden was channeling
an enormous amount of water from the fields on the east side
into the channel on the west side. In addition, there is a
drainage ditch that has been well maintained running through
a corn field that converges with this channel just to the
north of Hay Rd. The volume of water running under Hay Rd.
during the rain on Sunday and into a pasture was so great,
you could actually see some of the bank on the right side
eroding. I believe this is all running into Babbling Brook,
if it is not actually the "head waters" for the brook
itself. I was able to determine that this is about a mile
from where Babbling Brook empties into
Lost Lake.
- Today,
I contacted Dave Meisenheimer,
Soil
Conservation Technician with the NRCS (Natural
Resources Conservation Service) out of Oregon. Dave
is a very knowledgeable person in this area and knows the
landowners very well. He understands the issue and the major
impact that poor drainage management has on the ecosystem
and the erosion of valuable farm land and how to get
landowners to recognize the problem and remedy it using
tools and support funding available. He indicated he would
personally look into this particular concern and offer up a
plan to help alleviate it. I expect to hear from him over
the next several weeks, based on his schedule.
- Finally,
your RCD is working closely with the NRCS to develop a
watershed plan that will involve a working
Planning
Committee made up of watershed experts, landowners
and stakeholders that, over time, will lead to a total
conservation effort of our entire watershed and the
resulting positive benefits it will bring not only to Lost
Lake, but the entire ecosystem in our area.
